Three years ago, the city turned over Williamsburg's decommissioned Engine 212 station house to community groups planning a cultural center for the neighborhood. Like many grand plans, nothing but crickets were heard in the meantime, so Borough Pres Marty Markowitz's announcement yesterday that the project has acquired critical funding that means it's back on, like, now. Urban Architectural Initiatives put together initial renderings for the 6,000-square-foot, three-story space at 134 Wythe Avenue known as the "People's Firehouse", which will include classrooms, conference space, and a ground-floor gallery.
