A turreted Crown Heights mansion hits the auction block next month at a starting bid of $500,000—the new owner will have to use all the leftover cash for a complete gut renovation since it's been "empty and decaying" since 2008. The three-story, five-bedroom, two-bathroom house was purchased by the city for a grou-assisted living home, but the neighborhood's historic preservation codes "didn't allow for installing fire escapes." A few other hurdles: raccoons in the backyard, crumbling slate roof, peeling paint, "plumbing woes and a mournful-looking two-car garage in back." [NYDN]
