Now Playing at Loew's Theater on Canal Street: Nothing

High-minded plans for an arts center and ambitions for condo construction have both come to nothing at 31 Canal. Two years ago it looked like the bricked-up theater would be the site of Chinatown's Lincoln Center. The old Loew's Theater at 31 Canal Street had been landmarked and the owners were partnering with a community group to turn the building into an arts center. An architect at Rogers Marvel said the interior of the old theater?sealed off for 30 years?looked good. The update: total stasis. The owners of the building have abandoned plans for building up and residential, while talks with the arts group came to nothing. This is like watching a great trailer and then having the film break in the first minutes of the first reel. Boooo!
