Bloomberg Wages Second Battle of Kingsbridge Armory

New, 2 comments

Mayor Bloomberg returned to the topical site of a major defeat during his State of the City address yesterday, and committed to doing something, anything with the Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx. His defeat the first time he backed the development of the Kingsbridge Armory was so resounding?the City Council voted down a plan to turn it into a shopping mall 45-1?that we wouldn't blame him if he figured the Bronx edifice was more trouble than it was worth. But Bloomberg is in legacy-shoring mode, and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.?the primary political opponent to re-development three years ago?may see that stonewalling development is not an EZ-Pass to higher political office. The Kingsbridge Armory plan was stopped in its tracks over insistence that workers at any included retail businesses be paid a special "living wage". Alternative plans on the table are therefore less employee-reliant, like turning the armory into a sports facility.
