Art of Architecture at NYPL; Timber in the City Design Contest

MIDTOWN?As part of the New York Public Library's new series exploring the art of architecture, author/illustrator Joe McKendry will be discussing his new book, "One Times Square: A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World." McKendry creating historically accurate watercolor paintings of Times Square, depicting it over more than 100 years. RED HOOK?The New School is tasking design students and young architects to rethink the role of wood in urban construction for a design competition called "Timber in the City." The competition asks entrants to create a mid-rise, mixed-used complex for a waterfront site in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Designs must incorporate affordable housing, a bike repair shop and storage, and a center for "the innovative use of wood technology." Project submissions are due by May 22, 2013.
