"They were anything but beautiful then. No one wanted to live there anymore than you'd want to live right now in one of the beautiful Victorians in downtown Detroit. It's only now that the area has been rejuvenated -- thanks in part to Penn South -- that people are crying that some of the old buildings were taken down. People keep forgetting what a cesspool NYC was in the 60's and 70's -- you need to view these buildings within the historical period that they were built in. I know they look a little dingy and imposing now, but they are actually highly successful. Firstly, they are owned by the tenants, secondly they are self supporting, and third they are well maintained. They are a world apart from the public housing projects."?particleman [Go Inside Penn South Co-op; Statue of Liberty Crown Reopens]
