New York City's favorite brownstone quarry, the very last quarry of its kind, is shutting down. Portland Brownstone Quarries has been mined on and off for centuries, with Mike Meehan running the excavations for the last 20 years. One architectural conservator said, "I'm telling you, he was our hero." People are scrambling to get more of the stones, and soon everyone will just have to settled for the fake brown cement-based stuff. [NYT; photo]
