How can the city best prepare for the big storms that are only likely to become more frequent due to global warming? The MTA has spent $117 million on new technology?pumps and train yard flood barriers, for example?meant to protect against storms. There's also a new design for an upward-sloping brushed metal subway grate that's meant to reduce flooding in the subways. Outside the MTA, though, most developers don't want to invest in such technology because it's "a downer." On the other hand, so is drowning. [Gotham Gazette]
