A fall 2011 report from Columbia University actually laid out the possible effects on NYC of a storm like Sandy, a category 1 or 2 hurricane coinciding with high tide. So what did the report predict? One billion gallons of water left behind in subway tunnels, which is about the same amount of drinking water the city consumes per day. It could take about a week to pump each tunnel free of water.
