High Line Has Minimal Damage; Fire Island Hit Hard by Sandy

New, 3 comments

FIRE ISLAND?New York's beloved summertime playground was walloped by Hurricane Sandy. Eighty percent of homes on Fire Island sustained damage and at least twelve residences were completely swept out to sea. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said the Fire Island "will never be the same." [Curbed Hamptons]

WEST CHELSEA?New York's favorite elevated park, on the other hand, sustained little damage. Friends of the High Line sent out a newsletter today saying that the park, like all city parks, is closed while the damage is assessed, but early reports show little damage to "planting beds, design features, and artwork." A few trees were uprooted, but the most damage occurred underground, where saltwater flooded the park's utility and electrical rooms. Once power is restored, officials will have a better idea of when the park will reopen. [CurbedWire Inbox; official]
