Anna Wintour-Hated Village Building Gets DOB Permit

Plans for an eight-story building at 178 Bleecker Street raised neighbors' ire a few years back, because those plans were made after the demolition of a historic row house on the spot. Even Vogue editor and nearby resident Anna Wintour got involved, pleading with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to denounce the "out-of-scale," "inappropriate" construction plan?which also would have blocked the private garden she shares with 21 other townhouses in the neighborhood. Several years later, the resistance has come to nothing: the DOB has issued a permit for partial work at 178 Bleecker. The permit still calls for an eight-story building with five residential units. There will also be non-commercial art gallery and an eating or drinking establishment; the original plan called for a jazz club/cabaret.
