Vishaan Chakrabarti, SHoP partner and director of Columbia's Center for Urban Real Estate, thinks the storm is a perfect reason to bring back LoLo, his proposal that we use landfill to connect Governosr Island and Lower Manhattan. The plan involves replacing sea walls with marshland to better absorb storm impacts, and creating barrier islands in the harbor for further storm protection. Chakrabarti is newly inspired by his visit to Rotterdam, where he saw a $4 billion sea gate twice the size of the Eiffel Tower. He thinks NYC could use similar structures at the Verrazano, Perth Amboy, and Hells Gate. [NYO]
