Artist to Line Madison Square Park With 1.4 Million Ft. of Rope

New, 6 comments

Come spring, the lawns of Madison Square Park will transformed into colorful chambers lined with 1.4 million feet of painted rope. The park conservancy commissioned artist Orly Genger to design the spring installation, titled "Red, Yellow, and Blue," which will feature knotted nautical ropes formed into undulating fence-like structures that will border the lawns. Genger collected the rope from ports along the eastern seaboard, and she'll cover it with more than 3,000 gallons of paint, creating a piece that weighs more than 100,000 pounds. It will be unveiled May 2 and on display through September 8, 2013 before traveling to Boston.
