The MTA has asked for $600 million in funds to fix up the South Ferry/Whitehall Street subway station after Hurricane Sandy's flooding, way more than it cost to build the new South Ferry station in the first place. Second Avenue Sagas explains why: the MTA is, for once, actually overestimating how much something will cost so that it will look better when the final price tag comes to light. Of course, anything close to $600M won't go over well, and Second Avenue Sagas hopes this will spark a broader discussion about subway construction costs. [SAS]
