Despite its location in SoPo, NYU kept the lights on and the heat pumping throughout Hurricane Sandy. How? In 2011, the university installed a cogeneration plant that supplies the core buildings near Washington Square with power, so they don't need to be connected to the grid. Normally, the plant plugs into ConEd's network to share power, but pre-storm, it went into "island mode," partially saving NYU from Sandy's wrath. [NYT]
