The maisonette at 998 Fifth Avenue has had a difficult time luring buyers, despite the building's illustrious pedigree as the address that inspired the Guggenheims and Vanderbilts to leave behind the townhouse life. The apartment first asked $24 million, then $19 million, then $22 million. Finally, someone's agreed to buy the place (which also goes by the address 999 Fifth Avenue). No word yet on the final sale price, but if the buyer has anything left over, he or she can store it in the wall safe.
