The Times has the narrative of just what happened after the One57 crane collapsed in Hurricane Sandy's high winds. Michael Aicha, a city buildings engineer, tells Charles Bagli he thought there was an 80 percent chance the crane would fall to the street in the hours after the initial collapse. "Usually, metal gets fatigued and it would let go." The city's current view is that the crane's collapse was "a freakish occurence." The broken boom will be cut into sections for easier removal.
