Opponents of the concrete boardwalk in Coney Island said that Hurricane Sandy actually helped their case. Post-storm, they discovered that the original wooden boardwalk better blocked the sand than the new concrete section. How? "The slatted wooden boardwalk filters seawater as it retreats, letting sand build up on top and underneath. The concrete boardwalk doesn't work that way, leaving huge dunes to be deposited on the street behind it." [Brooklyn Paper]
