Pier 40 might not have Douglas Durst to kick around anymore, but at least it still has its ball fields. The sinking pier still needs around $100 million to save it from disappearing into the ocean, but, for the time being, $50,000 from local youth sports organizations was enough to get the pier's sports fields up and running again after they suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy. And only at the much maligned Pier 40 could a devastating superstorm somehow end up improving things. "The field is better now than it was. Some of the seams [on the field] were ripped open and now they're smoothed out," the president of the Pier Park & Playground Association told DNAinfo. The next step: getting the electricity turned back on.
