Christian de Portzamparc's 40-story Fortress of Glassitude project on Park Avenue South has been in development for ten years, and it looks like shovels finally are nearing the ground with the help of Toll Brothers and Equity Residential. The two firms are building a combination condo-rental building, with Toll Brothers building condos on the top 20 floors and Equity building rental units below them. The firms purchased the 20,000 square plot of land at Park Avenue South and 28th Street, after a smaller developer's plans for building Portzamparc's Fortress of Glassitude came crashing to pieces when the recession hit after years of gaining zoning and building approvals.
Toll and Equity decided to retain Portzamparc's design because they did not want to build just another "Joe Blow" building, and importantly because his design was already fully approved, meaning construction could begin almost immediately.
