The announcement that Cornell had won the city contest to build an applied sciences and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island came with renderings by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, but it isn't actually certain yet that SOM will handle the campus design. The Journal and a press release inform us that the university has narrowed down the field from 43 proposals to six firms that will have a shot at the design. The six finalists are SOM, OMA, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Morphosis Architects, Steven Holl Architects, and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. None of the finalists have done renderings yet?the next step is "to assemble a team of consultants and prepare for an interview to discuss their team's capabilities to successfully design the university's project." Cornell plans to choose a winner by April.
Regardless of who that winner is, SOM will be involved, since the firm is helping Cornell with the campus master plan. The previously-discussed solar panels and geothermal wells will remain part of the plan, as will the footprint and public spaces from the university's original proposal.
