Is This a Bodega? Lafayette Smoke Shop on Spring & Lafayette

New, 5 comments

Bodegas are like porn, you know one when you see it. Yet some stores defy easy classification and straddle certain lines that define conventional expectations of what makes a bodega. Here now, we ask you whether a particular store can call itself a bodega?

The Lafayette Smoke Shop at Cleveland Place advertises all the staples of your standard bodega on its awning: from an ATM to Lotto tickets—it's not quite A-Z but it's covering all of the bodega bases. Inside the tiny corner store, however, there are more glossies than groceries and no sandwich counter at all. The plexiglass covers protecting the candy shelves remind us of bodegas in rougher neighborhoods than Soho. What do you say readers?
