Vishaan Chakrabarti is joining SHoP Architects as its seventh partner, making the firm's think-tank structure even wonkier. Chakrabarti is most recently the director of the Center for Urban Real Estate (CURE) at Columbia University's graduate school (a position he will retain), but will join SHoP with an emphasis on large-scale projects and urban planning. Chakrabati and SHoP have worked together in the past?at SOM on the Columbia School of the Arts project, as head of the Manhattan Office of the Department of City Planning on the East River Waterfront Esplanade, at Related on the Hunters Point South project, and at Columbia GSAPP on the Center for Global Design and Development project. Several sources revealed that Chakrabarti was mulling offers from various other firms and institutions before joining SHoP. Our only question: how much closer does this bring us to making LoLo a reality?
