Landmarks Commission Approves Hotel Chelsea Renovation

New, 12 comments

Two weeks after his last Landmarks Preservation Commission visit, architect Gene Kaufman returned today to present his revised plans for the Hotel Chelsea, which included removing the planters from the balconies and making the transom windows out of colored glass. The proposed rooftop addition, which was a point of contention at the last hearing, has been slightly reduced in size, pulled back from the turrets, and will be metal instead of stucco. The LPC found all of this appropriate and approved the changes with only one vote against. None of the dozen or so Hotel Chelsea residents who made themselves heard at the last hearing were present.
