Welcome back to The Brokerbabble Glossary, where we take a word or a turn of phrase that seems to show up in an unreasonable number of listings and decipher its true meaning. If you have any ideas for us, send them to the tipline. Today's word: Incomparable.
Incomparable, as a concept, is pretty straightforward. It describes something without peer or rival, something so great that it literally cannot be compared. Something like...let's see...Shakespeare. Quick, think of a playwright who is comparable to Shakespeare. You can't do it. Shakespeare is incomparable. Now, quicker, think of an apartment that's comparable to an apartment with two brick walls. Oh, all of them? Right.
Wait. Hold on a second. What can be ours? Views of this apartment? So you're offering an adjacent apartment with a direct line of sight into the windows? Is this legal?
There are 50 active listings on Streeteasy that claim to have "incomparable service." This begs the question: if all their services are incomparable, does that not make them comparable to each other?
Yes, 150 East 61st Street, you are the only apartment with a living room of this size and elegance. Incomparable.
