NYC is desperate for school space, so to avoid overcrowding, the DOE rents space in buildings that used to be religious institutions, which boggles the minds of many because the city is currently evicting small churches that use schools for services, saying they don't want to blur the lines between church and state. One man summed it up as "the weird and strange and contradictory situation of: schools meeting in former church schools, O.K.; churches meeting in schools, not O.K." [NYT]
