New York City's small theaters are having a difficult time staying afloat, as their landlords choose conversion to apartments or retail space over letting the lower-rent-paying theaters hang onto their stages. In 2003, NYC had 200 theaters with 99 or fewer seats; 50 of those had vanished by 2010, either converted or demolished altogether. Manhattan Theatre Source lost its space at 177 MacDougal after the rent rose from $6,000/month to $9,000/month over the past decade. No curtain calls allowed. [WSJ]
