Faculty members at Columbia occupy much of 455 Central Park West, a French chateau-like building that was the city's first cancer hospital, and then a nursing home, before its residential conversion. But what might be the building's coolest unit, its chapel, has struggled to lure an owner. (The apartment has had a renter; the last rental ask was $25,000/month.) It tried a sky-high price of $17.5 million in 2008, and it's since been on and off the market at a discounted $12.5 million. The PriceChopper visited again yesterday, and the new price is an even $10 million. The common charges will set the owner back another $5,810/month, plus taxes of $3,074. But then, gold-leafed plaster walls are hard to come by in this century.
