Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe has put his Tribeca duplex penthouse at 533 Canal Street on the market, stating a desire to clearly delineate the spaces between his home and work life. The very successful rock band from Athens, Georgia precipitated the breakthrough of alternative music as a popular format in the 1990s. More recently, Stipe has been returning to his roots as a non-musical artist, and The Wall Street Journal describes his 3BR/2.5BA penthouse filled with examples of his work, like a pile of bronze cassette tapes in a mirrored shrine. Before Stipe bought the property for $5.75 million in 2007, it belonged to director Gus Van Sant and then Casey Affleck. The duplex features a 2,500-square-foot terrace and a kitchen designed by Mario Batali. Stipe is asking just under$11.0 million for the penthouse, which has some great views of the Hudson River and surrounding Tribeca neighborhood.
