Once upon a time, 160 East 22nd Street was going to be The Thing That Ate Gramercy, a 21-story condo project from developer Kaish & Taub. Things didn't go quite as planned: first the site was scheduled for foreclosure auction, and then the developer filed for bankruptcy to stop the auction. Why? There was allegedly a buyer interested in purchasing the land, and that buyer turned out to be Toll Brothers, who paid $35.5 million for the 276-280 Third Avenue lot and some neighboring air rights. That purchase happened a year ago, and now there's finally some excavation work happening at the site (photographic proof above!).
We checked with Toll reps, who told us the building?which will use the 160 East 22nd Street address and go by the name 160 East 22nd?will be a 21-story condo with about 80 units. If anyone comes across renderings, kindly tell the tipline.
