Cornerspotted: Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn

New, 1 comment

Commenter BklynScribe pointedly observed about this week's cornerspotter, "...the Board of Ed hired only a handful or architects and gave them all a detailed program, most New York City schools look alike." So our clue/reveal that this was still a functioning public school in NYC was probably as helpful as pointing out the haystack in a field and letting you know that the needle was in that particular one. In fact, the building above was Thomas Jefferson High School on Pennsylvania and Dumont Avenues in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The school was built in 1922 and, in 2007, split into five separate schools ranging from Performing Arts and Technology High School to the FDNY High School for Fire and Life Safety. It's alumni are equally diverse. Actors Danny Kaye and Shelly Winters are graduates, as is boxer Riddick Bowe. Most anomalous: lefty author and historian Howard Zinn (A People's History of the United States) and Occupy-bête noire Lloyd Blankfein (CEO, Goldman Sachs).

Here's a shot of a fairly good-sized turnout to watch the groundbreaking for the school.
