Cultural museums in downtown Manhattan are reporting an increased number of visitors since the opening of the 9/11 memorial in September. Three million visitors from 150 different countries have flocked to the memorial and then spilled out into the surrounding area, ending up at such museums as the Museum of American Finance, The National Museum of the American Indian, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage, which has reportedly had 20% more visitors since the memorial opened. "We believe that ... downtown is going to be the center for foreign tourists for years to come," that museum's director remarked, astutely. This isn't a particularly surprising development, but it is a nice one for everyone involved (expect for anyone trying to walk on the sidewalk.) [CNY]
