The City Council will hold its first public hearing on the NYU 2031 expansion plan tomorrow morning, and opponents are taking advantage of the occasion to hold yet more protests against the university's proposals. Not surprising! One protest this evening focuses on something we haven't discussed much around here: the potential demolition of the Washington Square Village Sasaki Garden. The nephew of architect Hideo Sasaki has been writing to NYU administrators to plead for the garden's rehabilitation, and supporters are gathering there tonight to "mourn the approaching death of our beloved Sasaki Garden, and all the other green spaces around NYU." A tipster passed along some images of the garden, including old plans that weren't ultimately used, so we've posted them in the gallery above. NYU opponents and supporters will gather again tomorrow morning for broader pro and con rallies.
