Taxi-Sized Hole in Gramercy Fence Will Cost $50K to Fix

New, 10 comments

Note to inattentive drivers: if you're going to carelessly sail through an intersection and into a fence, try not to let it be a landmarked fence that dates back to 1831, because those are EXPENSIVE to fix. The estimate to repair the section of the fence around Gramercy Park that was damaged by a taxi last month is almost $50,000, according to DNAinfo, because "36 fragments of the fence’s pickets will need to be pieced back together" and some of the fence pieces have to be recreated entirely. The job is expected to take months. In the interim, the hole has been patched with shutters fetched from the basement of the Gramercy Park Hotel. At least no one was hurt.
