City officials unveiled a plan today to turn thousands of the city's pay phones, which currently function mainly as urinals, into free WiFi hotspots. In order to test out the program, they've installed ten initial hubs—seven in Manhattan, two in Brooklyn, and one in Queens. "Within 12 months, we could have the city blanketed in WiFi," said an executive at Van Wagner, the pay phone operator providing the service. Everyone agrees that WiFi hotspots are preferable to Mayor Bloomberg's plan of turning pay phone kiosks into single-occupancy residences. BOOM! Got you, Bloomberg. [DNAinfo]
