Council Committee Approves NYU Plan, Boomerangs Clipped

New, 7 comments

The City Council's Land Use Committee voted 19-1 in favor of recommending the NYU 2031 plan this afternoon after a 20% reduction in density was hashed out, according to Twitter reports. The reduced-Sexton Plan apparently follows a suggestion by Times archicritic Michael Kimmelman to give a serious haircut to the verticality of the new buildings. A Tweet from Observer reporter Matt Chaban reports that the proposed building on Mercer Street will now only be four stories. Indeed, 26% of the reduction in above ground density comes mostly at the expense of the boomerang buildings—specifically the one on Mercer Street that would be reduced in size by 76%.
