Cornerspotted: The Original Museum of Modern Art

New, 1 comment

Congrats to reader Dasracht, who correctly identified this week's Cornerspotter building in a matter of minutes as "the original Museum of Modern Art on west 53rd Street off Fifth." Abby Rockefeller (wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr.) was one of primary founding forces behind MoMA, and although her husband was initially opposed to her undertaking, the Rockefellers eventually wound up donating the land under their family homes on West 53rd Street as part of the museum's endowment. So Beaux Arts evolved to Modern Art in Midtown West. Thanks for playing!
