The October opening date for Roosevelt Island's Four Freedoms Park is inching closer, and Michelle Young and Emma Levy of Untapped New York stopped by over the weekend to see the latest progress. The "Room" is complete, the lawn is lush and grassy, and now FDR himself has made an appearance. A banner showing the forthcoming bronze bust sculpture of FDR now hangs in the stone alcove where it will be placed, and his Four Freedoms speech has been carved on the opposite side. Young reports that work is also being done on the Smallpox Hospital, New York City's only landmarked ruin. Park officials hope that the building can serve as the visitors center, and Young says "engineers are hopeful for its adaptive reuse after the investigatory work done last week."
