25-Story Building at 215 Chrystie Street Will Be a Hotel

At the end of May, we found out that the last parcel of the Cooper Square Urban Renewal Area, an empty lot at 215 Chrystie Street, would be getting a 25-story mixed-use building, and now Bowery Boogie reports that "mixed-use" means hotel and condos. Thirty years ago, plans were approved for a nine-story affordable housing apartment building, and now developers are discussing modifications to these plans to allow for the new sun-blocking tower. New public documents of the plans show that the first 17 stories would be for the hotel, including one floor for a pool and gym, and the remainder are marked as residential. Handel Architects has been tapped to design the hotel, which is going by the work name "Chrystie St. Hotel." Handel is no stranger to the hospitality business?the firm is responsible for Chelsea's Dream Hotel, Trump Soho, and 40 Bond. As Bowery Boogie puts it, "This should give the Lower East Side a sour taste of what could arrive here in a few short years."
