As Harlem becomes more commercially viable for big chains like Starbucks and Rite Aid, the murals of Franco "Franco the Great" Gaskin are becoming casualties. Gaskin has painted over 200 murals in the neighborhood over the past 35 years, and they're now starting to disappear as new businesses come in and remove the steel-roll down gates that served as the canvases for much of his work. A nonprofit group, Team Franco, has been formed in an attempt to save the artwork, but so far they haven't gotten any type of response from property owners. [NYT]
