Two years after Toll Brothers abandoned its development site along the Gowanus Canal, a new developer has stepped up to the plate. Brownstoner reports that the Lightstone Group wants to build 700 units of housing on the lot, which is bordered by the Gowanus Canal, Bond Street, Carroll Street and Second Street. 'Stoner talked to CB6 District Manager Craig Hammerman who confirmed that Lightstone is interested in the site. Another CB6 member said, "They will be seeking more allowances that will demand a ULURP hearing. I think they will be seeking more height in a trade for 20 percent affordable." The developer will present a formal plan to the community board this fall.
Toll Brothers had planned to build a ginormous 605,380-square-foot, 447-condo development on the lot, but they scrapped their plans and walked away from a $5.75 million down payment when the canal was deemed a Superfund site.
