The Rice mansion is one of the two freestanding mansions still, er, standing on Riverside Drive, where once there were around 30. Ephemeral New York looks at the mansion's decor and history: it had a two-story stone arch at the entrance, and the grounds once included a reflecting pool, garden, and chess room. But the original owners decamped to the Ansonia in 1907, and the place is a bit shabbier these days. [ENY]
