Brooklyn's Curious Canal; Progress at Old Ave. B Theater

GOWANUS?Joseph Alexiou, local journalist and Gowanus expert, has officially signed his contract with NYU Press for his upcoming book about the Superfund canal. Titled, "Gowanus: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Brooklyn's Curious Canal," the book is a narrative non-fiction history about the waterway, scheduled for publication in spring 2014. For a taste of what the book will offer, check out the video tour we took with Alexiou earlier this summer. [Curbedwire Inbox; official]

EAST VILLAGE?Construction has started at the site of the old Bijou/Charles Theatre on Avenue B. The old theater was torn down this summer, and now a tipster has sent a long a photo showing new construction fencing and scaffolding. Last we heard, the Elim Pentecostal Church would be building a 42-unit residential building on the lot, with additional room for the church. But DOB records show that this project is still pending zoning approval, so there may not be much action for awhile. Click through for the photo. [Curbedwire Inbox; previously]
