Back in the '20s and '30s, landlords lopped the stoops off of brownstones to squeeze in as many apartments as possible, but now people equate the stoopless townhouse to "a face without a nose." Homeowners are righting this wrong by building new stoops at $35K to $100K a pop to make the homes pretty again and increase the value. But stoops come with an annual fee if they poke out onto the sidewalk: $1000 on a regular street, but only $25 on a landmarked block. [NYT; Photo by Stephanie Smith/Curbed Flickr pool]
