The City Council's housing and buildings committee just passed a bill vastly increasing the fines for people who illegally rent their apartments out as hotel rooms on sites like Airbnb, while acknowledging it's a legitimate market that doesn't warrant eliminating. "We don't want to kill that market. How do you protect the tenants in the building, and how do you allow for a market that is growing? If we knew how to do it, we would do it." In the meantime: mega-fines. [TRD; previously]
