Cornell's Applied Science campus on Roosevelt Island could be powered by the East River. Verdant Power successfully built and tested a tidal turbine that can withstand the river's fast water speeds and mysterious debris, so within five years, 30 underwater turbines that look like giant hand held fans will be sending power to the city's grid. The system could power hundreds of homes, electric car charging stations, or Cornell's new school. [NYT; photo via Verdant Power]
