Decoded: The Incredible 'Opportunities' of NYC Real Estate

New, 2 comments

Welcome back to The Brokerbabble Glossary, where we take a word or a turn of phrase that seems to show up in an unreasonable number of listings and decipher its true meaning. If you have any ideas for us, send them to the tipline. Today's word: Opportunities.

When talking about real estate, in New York or elsewhere, the word "opportunities" can certainly apply. Being able to buy an entire building and rent out the apartments in it could certainly be a great opportunity, depending on a variety of factors. Being able to buy a 1BR condo in Murray Hill and then, well, own that condo...is slightly less of an opportunity. This listing does have one thing right, though: to live—to LIVE—is the greatest opportunity of all. (Not necessarily in Murray Hill, though.)

It is fairly common for listings to make mention of the incredible "shopping opportunities" or "restaurant opportunities" available in a specific area as if a) you couldn't just travel to a different neighborhood to shop or eat, and b) those things are actually "opportunities."

Storage is definitely among the funniest things that could ever be described as an "opportunity." Finally, the big chance your sweaters have been waiting for! To sit there!

Look, there are really two choices for this ground floor studio apartment. You can live in it, or you can rent it out. So, how many do you need for a myriad?
