Anyone whose day was ruined yesterday when J and M train service was suspended due to an electrical fire between the Bowery and Delancey-Essex stops may be heartened to learn that the reason for the fire was (might have been) something far more awesome than MTA incompetence. NBC reported that the fire was started by thieves who were heisting copper wire and allowed one of the wires to touch the third rail. Wire-cutting tools were found in a "closet-sized enclosure in the tunnel" and police suspect that the incident is part of a literal underground crime ring. In total, 2,000 feet of wire are missing from the station. [NBC, via Bowery Boogie]
