An architectural designer named John Locke (probably no relation to the fictional character or the 17th century philosopher) has been making pay phone kiosks on the Upper West Side into bookshelves and stocking them with actual books, which are then stolen by locals with trash bags. Still, kind of cool! The shelf that Locke designed hooks right onto the kiosk and can be installed in a matter of seconds. Imagine if all the pay phones in the city were turned into WiFi hotspots and libraries. How great would that be? [NYT]
