Brooklyn's Third Avenue near the Gowanus Canal has seen a rash of new, hip businesses appear over the past few years, which means that upscale residential development can't be far behind. (And, right on cue...) This isn't necessarily welcome news for the current residents of the "15-block stretch from the Prospect Expressway up to Union Street [that used to be] best known for its industrial vibe, not to mention its regular sewage overflow problems and a constant parade of prostitutes." The residents now worry about rising rents and the loss of the neighborhood's scrappiness. [Crain's; photo by Tom Giebel]
